I have received this book via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
When I read My Lady Jane, I immediately wanted to pick up this book!! Since I hadn’t read Jane Eyre yet, I made it my goal to read first the classic novel, and then read this book. So, literally one day after finishing Jane Eyre, I immediately started it.
My Plain Jane tells the story of Jane Eyre, but with a few twists. For one, Jane can see ghosts and this ability has gotten her into much trouble in the past, so she hides it. But, when a society that gets rid of troublesome ghosts finds out about her powers, they’ll do anything to hire her. There’s just one problem… Jane is in love with Rochester and doesn’t want to leave him.
Oh, this was so much fun!! I loved the way the supernatural powers of Jane (which are hinted at in the classic) were the main plot, I loved the characters (a bit in love with Mr. Blackwood, and I NEED Charlotte and Helen as friends) and the tone of the book. This was a bit of adventure, mystery, comedy, historical fiction. The writing was quite better than My Lady Jane, although it was not quite as ridiculously funny – but it’s really really funny, I promise.
It addressed all my issues with the classic: the big age disparity between Mr. Rochester and Jane Eyre, the strange and rude way he behaves, gave Bertha Rochester a story and explored her relationship with her husband, and so on. I also loved the contemporary comments on pre-Victorian England dressing style, socially accepted behavior, etc. I felt that I definitely learned a bit about that time!
If you love a good ghost story, want to laugh out loud and revisit a beloved classic, you’ll love this book!
