Most of the Series I Follow Finish This Year and I’m-

Hello readers!

So, in a desperate attempt to post something still today and not have another week of terrible scheduling for my blog, I am writing this rather random post! It came to my attention rather belatedly (we’re in mid-April… omg) that MOST of the series I follow are going to be DONE this year and I’m at a loss.

The realization came to me yesterday:

After posting this on Twitter, I realized there were a few more series ending this year! So, we have:

the burning god r f kuang the king of crows libba bray the mirror and the light hilary mantel

  • The Poppy War, by R. F. Kuang
  • The Diviners, by Libba Bray
  • Cromwell Trilogy, by Hilary Mantel
  • Empirium, by Claire Legrand
  • The Locked Tomb, by Tamsyn Muir
  • Legacy of Orisha, by Tomi Adeyami (not sure about this one)
  • Bromance Book Club (maybe?)

(The Green Bone Saga, by Fonda Lee apparently only ends on 2021, which at the same time WHYYY I NEED ANSWERS but also phewww my emotions will not be crushed for a while yet)

So after that, if I am not mistaken, which I probably am, there are only maybe three series that I currently follow which aren’t going to be finished this year (Green Bone Saga, for one, Alex Stern is another), and I have such conflicting feelings about that. I love following series, but I also love the freedom of picking up a book and knowing once I’m done reading it it’s done, instead of committing to several books for years. I’m excited to get my TBR a bit slimmer whenever I finish a book, instead of adding just the next book of the series, but I also love the world building, the emotional connection you form with character that you follow for a long time… Not sure how I feel. How do you guys feel about series? Do you follow many or do you prefer standalones?

  1. I’ve realized that I generally dislike series! I get bored very easily, and I’m always looking for the next beginning or new world. Once I get familiar with a fantasy world, I’m already looking forward to discovering the next new thing! Plus my memory sucks, so reading series installments months or years apart is so frustrating lmao.

    • Ugh I totally get it. I am doddling so much to read a 7-book series, and the books are not even that long. There is just SO MUCH to read, and it sucks when you wait for a book to come out for a year or longer and then it’s like… not nearly as good as you remember book 1 to be. So I’ve also been stepping back from those a lot. But when I was younger, I basically only read series! Funny how things change.

  2. I used to gravitate towards series and now I try to read them less! I hate waiting for the next book to come out, usually forget too much between books, and agree I’d rather slim my TBR than just add another book when I finish. That being said, when it’s a good series it’s SO nice to know the book will continue in a way rather than just end forever.

    • Yeah me too! It’s just so much work to follow through with 3, 5, 10 books… but it’s also so nice to go back to a world you know, except you’re reading a new story. There’s something really nice, almost cozy about it. Are you following any series now?
