This was an incredible reading week. I managed to finish The House of Spirits (excellent read), The House in Smyrna (so unique and raw) and Sisters (creepy and wonderfully written). The last two books were very short, but still I feel very accomplished! I’ve then started Things We Lost in the Fire and Drive your Plow over the Bones of the Dead. This puts me far closer to reaching my August reading goals, with 3/7 books finished.
Weekly Wrap Up
The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende / 5 stars
I hesitated with giving this 5 stars because it felt like a solid 4 for most of it for me, with some instances of “Omg I LOVE this”, but what cemented the 5-star rating for me was the feeling I had after finishing it – having my heart aching for a character I hated, realizing I deeply cared about some characters I gave no attention to in the beginning and had decided I wouldn’t care much for them at all, the discussions about dictatorships and socialism in Latin America I had with my husband for days while reading this, and just the fact that I can’t shut up about this book. It’s an incredible, layered work of fiction and I highly recommend it!
The House in Smyrna by Tatiana Salem Levy / 4 stars
I finished this short but incredible book. Told in a fragmented style, a woman’s search for identity and navigating grief for her mother’s death as well as her painful memories of an abusive relationship – this was intense, beautiful and visceral.
Sisters by Daisy Johnson / 4 stars
Daisy Johnson’s writing is one of the best out there, strong and evocative.
Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enriquez / Ongoing
I am terribly glad I picked this up. I did not enjoy Este é o Mar, her more recent book, but this is really good! I’m about 30% through and I love how creepy this is.
Drive your Plow over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk / Ongoing
It’s too early to tell if I like the story (I’m less than 10 pages in) but so far I really enjoy the atmosphere and writing!
