Weekly Wrap Up 13 – 19 Oct: A Sapphic Vampire, Haunted Houses and Lots of Murder

Hello readers!

I asked Book Twitter if I should buy some 2020 releases with creepy vibes and 81% of the votes were YES (I mean… who was surprised by that result? Me, actually, who somehow after years of being a part of the community, did not expect everyone to tell me to buy books. Shocking really.). So I bought:

Weekly Wrap Up

They Never Learn by Layne Fargo

This was a super fun read! I highly recommend it if you’re looking for an indulgent Sapphic read with a femme fatale who spends her free time plotting and killing abusive men.

Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

I had a bit of a mixed experience with this book but it ended up being such fun to read that I gave it 4 stars! It was a deliciously ghostly and murder-y read (even if I didn’t love the ending so much).

Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

Before Dracula, there was… Carmilla. A Sapphic vampire classic story which is atmospheric and really gave me Dracula vibes (I read the book some time ago). I have my own theories about the ending and would love to hear from you guys if you have different theories!

Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor, trans. by Sophie Hughes

I am LOVING this. It’s an incredible, gorgeous, poignant read and I am savoring every word of it. It tells the heartbreaking story of the murder of the Witch and now they’re searching for the killers. It’s a story of misogyny, violence, superstition and incredibly powerful. Both a painful and an addictive read.

Eartheater by Dolores Reyes, trans. by Julia Sanches

I just started this book, so it’s too early to tell if I like it, but so far I’m enjoying it!
