2022 Hyped Releases I Won’t Be Reading

Hello readers!

I’m a mood reader and easily influenced by what everyone else is reading. BUT I also have 24h on my day, a full-time job and a limited amount of energy, so obviously I can’t pick up everything people hype up throughout the year, especially from genres I don’t usually read, like romance or YA contamporaries.

So, I could easily just pull a list of most anticipated romance books of the year and this post would be done, but that’s boring, so I’ll go through the genres I actually read and find some books I won’t be reading.

Starting out with some mysteries and thrillers, since these are the genres I read the most:

The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager

I know that Kayla from Books and Lala really enjoyed this book but I have friends who actively warned me against it and honestly doesn’t sound like I’d enjoy this at all. I’ve also been spoiled (willingly) so there is really no erason for me to read it.

Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li

There was a time when I couldn’t go anywhere on Twitter, WordPress or Youtube without hearing about this book, then it came out and the hype kind of just… fizzled out. I hear the heist itself isn’t that well executed and I just don’t feel interested in this one anymore.

The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas

This is getting quite some hype lately, there is a lot of comparison with Mexican Gothic and Rebecca, but somehow this doesn’t quite get my attention. I can’t quite get a good idea of what to expect, is it a thriller, a slow-paced mystery, is it really Gothic? I think my hesitancy is also because the comparison to Mexican Gothic reminds me that I didn’t love Moreno-Garcia’s writing so I’m wondering if this will just be the same. experience all over again. I might change my mind though.

Fantasy is another genre I read a lot of and while this year there is a bunch of really great stuff coming out, I decided to skip on the books below despite their hype:

Book of Night by Holly Black

I actually tried reading this one – I loved Holy Black’s Cruel Prince series (although book 1 was significantly stronger than the other two books) but I read a few pages of this one and immediately put it down. There was nothing too wrong with it, but I feel like I’ve read this concept a million times before and didn’t want to read it again. The writing also felt a bit too YA for me.

Gallant by V.E. Schwab

I’m giving up on V. E. Schwab’s books. After loving Vicious a few years ago, nothing I read from her really topped that, or came even close. Gallant just sounds very boring, and the reviews coming in are not very exciting or convincing.

Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey

I have a weird relationship with Sarah Gailey’s books, because they always have such great concepts but I remember finding Magic for Liars just okay and a little bit silly. There are quite a few authors that have great ideas for a book but I kind of hesitate in reading because the writing doesn’t quite vibe with me, and sadly Sarah Gailey is one of them. I’ve also not heard great things about this one although it sounds right up my alley – Gothic, serial killers, someone leaving mysterious notes behind, a mystery to be uncovered? Sounds perfect – and yet.

Carrie Soto Is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Taylor Jenkins Reid is an author I’m fairly sure I claimed was on my auto-buy list. Her books make me so emotional, and the characters she writes always finding a way into my heart, but this books seems to revolve a lot around tennis and I…. have no interest whatsoever.

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Okay, so I’ve been seeing this book around a lot – I think it’s a historic horror, with some Gothic vibes that could maybe be considered a mystery as well, I’m not sure. I saw the synopsis for it but as usual, Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s writing is just not for me, I simply can’t enjoy it so I’ll sadly be giving this one a pass.
