Hello bookworms!
Today I got an exciting post to share with you! Last year, my boyfriend and I attempted to follow a few recipes to get to the perfect Butterbeer made with actual beer. Our first attempt became very buttery and oily and was difficult to swallow after a while – but this year we’re back at it, with a different recipe. While we read some amazing recipe ideas, we decided in the end to go for an adapted version of this Best Butterbeer Ever Recipe.
I have tried the one from Universal Studios, which tasted more like melted vanilla ice cream and, unsurprisingly, was non-alcoholic. We decided to make an adult version with actual beer!
Do note that we use typical barley beer from Germany, meaning this has more body and taste, perhaps more than one is used to if you don’t come from this region of Europe. In my opinion it’s absolutely delicious, but if you’re used to a lighter-tasting beer, don’t change up just for this recipe.
The result is a rather spicy beverage, honey-tasting with a strong taste of beer – many of the other recipes we saw didn’t take beer at all (which is confusing?!) and used some non-alcoholic drinks instead. So if you don’t like spicy and strong tasting beverages and prefer a more vanilla, ice-cream tasting thing, then there’s a lot of easy recipes out there! Personally, I love spicy drinks and this tasted – as my boyfriend perfectly described – like Christmas. Like cookies and beer and a hug.
Ingredients
500 ml (barley) beer
2-3 tablespoons of honey
1 pinch of cinnamon
1 dash of nutmeg
1 yolk
1 Tablespoon of butter (unsalted)
How To Do
- In a bowl, whisk the cinnamon, nutmeg, yolk and honey together until the mixture becomes smooth.
- Put the beer to boil on medium temperature in a separate pot. Once it boils, put it immediately off the oven.
- Add a tablespoon of hot beer into the honey mixture, whisking it. Repeat 5 or 6 times more. This is to warm up the mixture without cooking the yolk.
- Once the mixture is smooth and more liquid, pour it into the beer inside the pot. Whisk it until it becomes homogeneous.
- Put the over to a low temperature and put the mixture to simmer for 5 minutes.
- Add a tablespoon of butter. Whisk it until it is homogeneous with the mixture. You’re done! Make sure the spicing is to your liking and serve!
You can add ice cream, or Chantilly on top if you like!
Now THIS I’m going to try out!
There’s a Comic Café in our city that has butter beer as well but I.. Let’s just say that I thought it was disgusting and I NEED to find butter beer that actually tastes good, haha.
[Also yay for Belgium because good beer: HERE.]

Yes, and you can definitely try this one with whipped cream too. I don’t like drinks too sugary so I didn’t add, but you can adapt to your taste 😀

We just recently had the universal studios version and yeah it tasted like frozen cream soda. I imagine it’s not alcoholic so kids can drink it? I dunno. Was butterbeer alcoholic though? It’s been many years since I read Harry Potter, haha. Love that mug! Thanks for sharing an adult recipe. 🙂

Yeah I suppose it’s for the children mostly! My sister loved it though. But I think the book one is slightly alcoholic, because Hermione gets tipsy at some point…
Thank youu 😍😍
