 Snow White

The Book (like the movie) That Started It All
Favorite Debut Book From an Author

Quite a no-brainer, it has to be The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. The writing is simple but gripping and intense. It’s as if every word is where it should be, and the story itself will make you laugh, keep you on your toes and will definitely break your heart. This is such a must-read! This book will surely make it to my favorites from this year, if not THE favorite.

Cinderella

A Diamond in the Rough
Just like Cinderella, you either didn’t expect much out of this character in the beginning, but they turned out to be a total gem.

Rishi, from When Dimple met Rishi. When I read the synopsis of this book, I expected to not like or relate to Rishi a whole lot, since Dimple and I have much more in common. He seemed too sweet, too romantic, too traditional, but I was surprised by how much I could relate to his character. By the end of the book I was a little in love with him (one more thing Dimple and I have in common now).

Aurora

A book that makes you sleep or just could not hold your attention.

Fallen, by Lauren Kate. I’ve already mentioned this book in my Anti-TBR #1 post, so I won’t write too much here. It must have taken me more than an hour to read 30 pages. I couldn’t get into the writing, I didn’t like the main character or the secondary ones. I know many people really love this one, though, and the plot sounds so interesting. It was just not a book for me.

Ariel

Under the Sea
A book with a water/ocean setting

The only book that comes to mind is All the Light we Cannot See, which is set in a city surrounded by sea. It’s a set in WWII, telling the stories of a Marie-Laure, a French blind girl, and Werner, a German boy with a knack for Engineering. As the war goes from a rumor to reality, both children must face the challenges it brings. It’s a beautiful story.

Belle

Beauty and the Books
Name a book with the best bookworm/book lover

I considered writing Hermione for this one, but to be a little more creative, I nominate Maggie from Inkheart. She is such a bookworm, and her father repairs books for a living (how great is that?). I love this book so much, the writing is so enchanting. Inkheart was one of my favorite series as a teen.

The Thief and the Princess
Name a book with an unlikely love story (either in terms of romance or a book you didn’t expect to love so much)

Yes, this book has showed up in the blog already and I can’t seem to shut up about it (neither will I shut up about it in the future). In Poison Study, Yelena has murdered a man and, to escape a death sentence, she agrees to become a food tester. The romance between her and Valek was something that caught me by surprise entirely.

The Real Life Princess
Name a book that is based on a real life person you want to read/have read

Hidden Figures, by Margot Lee Shetterly. I think by now most people know the story, but to sum up: three awesome black women save NASA. It’s on my TBR at the moment! The movie is absolutely amazing, so I am very much looking forward to the book.

I can’t help it, I love Alanna. Strong, fierce, stubborn to the bones, I wish I had read this book as a kid or teenager! Alanna is one of two twins, and she takes her brother’s place in training for knighthood, disguising herself as a boy. To achieve her dream, she goes through much adventure, and needs to learn so much more than just battle skills.

Name a diverse book, whether it is a diverse set of characters (like Tiana’s group of Naveen, Louis, Ray, and more) or just diverse in general

Name the longest book you’ve ever read

Has to be Pillars of the Earth, with 1100 pages. It’s an epic that follows the construction of a cathedral in a fictional English town for several generations. Heartbreaking and very well-written.

Merida

I Determine My Own Fate
A book where there is no love story/interest or isn’t needed

Inside Out and Back Again was one of the most beautiful books I’ve read last year. It’s in the form of poems, which normally throws me off, but in this case it fit well. It tells the heartbreaking story of Hà, a little girl that needs to leave Saigon with her family because of the Vietnam War and arrives in the US to rebuild her life.

Frozen Hearts
A book in a winter/cold setting

The Snow Child, by Eowyn Ivey. I got this book as a gift a few years ago, because guess who went on an international trip and forgot to pack a book. Me, that’s who. This story is about Jack and Mabel, a couple who moved to Alaska looking for opportunity, but is drifting apart. The hardships of life in 1920 Alaska and their childless, lonely life creep into their relationship, so one day they build a child made of snow. The next morning, it’s gone, and the couple gets a glimpse of a blonde child in the woods. It’s a sad, moving and very beautiful book. I need to re-read this!

A character that goes on a journey

This is another one I don’t need to present to most book lovers, but again to sum up: Bilbo Baggings, a hobbit who loves his quiet life in the shire, finds himself in an adventure with dwaves and a wizard, searching for their long-lost treasure, which is kept by Smaug, the dragon.
